THE JOB JAR IS OUT AGAIN!

We want to put the St. Philip’s sign out at 27th and Dunbar again on Sunday mornings and while we have someone to take it up there we need someone who can bring it back to the church after the 10.00am service.  Please see one of the clergy or call the office to let us know if you can do this.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU... GETTING TO KNOW US... If you are fairly new to the parish, having joined in the past year or two, or simply feel you have not had a chance to get to know many people because you have often been on the run so unable to relax and chat for a little while, then this is specially for you. Please come and join us in the Fireside Room after church on

19th February for an hour—or whatever time you can afford up to 12:30 pm. Enjoy a coffee in the gym, then come for light refreshments and social get-together while the children enjoy supervised bowling in our own historic bowling alley downstairs. We look forward to getting to know one another better—see you there!

LIVING BREAD—WEDNESDAY EVENING LENTEN SERIES

Ever wondered what Living Bread is like—the Bread of Life, or Bread of Heaven?  What are its ingredients, how is it made, can it really satisfy us in a way that we “…want no more?”  Every Sunday, and at mid-week services, we hear Christ’s invitation to “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you…”  Do we feel well-fed afterwards, ready to continue our journey out in the world?  This Lent we will be exploring what it means to “Taste and see that the Lord is good, happy are they who trust in him!”

-           29th February— Come to the Feast or how to prepare for the party with John and Marilyn

-           7th March— Food for Thought or how to read, enjoy and digest scripture with Maryann

-           14th March— Recipe for Peace using various forms of prayer with John

-           21st March— Ingredients for Well-being bringing what we have to the table with Marilyn

-           28th March— Food for the Journey, a special Eucharist where we can “Taste and see…”

Each session will start at 7:30 pm in the Fireside Room and end with Compline, except for the final evening when we will move into the Church for a special Eucharist that will bring it all together using the freshly-baked bread we partly prepared the previous week.  Please bring your aprons or a clean tea-towel on 21st—you will need them .

We hope you will join us,  John, Marilyn and Maryann

FIVE FOR BREAKFAST

Lord Selkirk is a large inner city school in East Vancouver that supports a special program “Books and Breakfast”, which feeds approximately 40 or more students twice a week.   For some students this may be their only all-important first meal of the day because hungry children can’t learn.   Part of the program is a special monthly pancake breakfast done by principal Richard Zerbe who makes the pancakes in shapes to go with the month’s special day - like hearts for Valentine’s Day.   There is a major need for new griddles, kitchen utensils and monthly supplies (juice, milk, and such) so this special breakfast program can continue.

To support this program, the Outreach committee is asking parishioners to take part in our “Five for Breakfast” fundraiser that continues until February 12.   Just donate $5.00, or any amount in $5.00 increments to help raise $2,000. to fund the pancake breakfast program for two full school years.    Please mark your contribution clearly on your offering envelope, or on an envelope from the pews.  Contact Penni Stock for more information.

ADULT BAPTISM, CONFIRMATION, REAFFIRMATION.

Please speak to John or Marilyn (by February 19)  if during Lent you wish to prepare for Baptism at our Easter Vigil, and/or Confirmation or Reaffirmation by Bishop Michael at Christ Church Cathedral.  The latter usually takes place on a Sunday afternoon shortly after Easter (date to be confirmed).

Normally this requires at least a full-day preparatory session and follow-up meeting with one of the clergy, plus a commitment to attend services on Ash Wednesday and throughout Holy Week.  Ideally, you would also attend our Wednesday evening Lenten Series, or join a Philippians group to help broaden and deepen your faith as well as connect with other members of the community.

This can be a life-changing experience, helping you to mark a major turning point or milestone in your faith, so we feel truly honoured to walk this part of the journey with you.

STREET MINISTRY

Our friends are settling in nicely at the Dunbar Housing.  This week we placed 2 more of our homeless in this facility, making a total of 13 of our folks in their own apartments.  We still have 20/25 more homeless in our area.  We met with Coast Mental Health and the staff of the Dunbar unit this morning to present the names and cases of  those still homeless.  We want to be sure that they are all on official listings for housing units now under construction.

Last Thursday we met with the Dunbar Community Advisory Committee at the Dunbar apartments where they met the tenants, made plans for an open house, and for an official opening ceremony.  Incidentally one of our friends, Pete, was elected by the tenants of  the unit to be the tenants representative on the Dunbar Community Advisory Committee. (Congratulations to Pete).

I have accepted an invitation to be a member of the selection panel for the city’s “ 2012 Courage to Come Back award.”  This will be a rewarding experience for myself, and further exposure for the ministry.

Please keep all concerned in the ministry in your prayers.  And do not hesitate to become involved.  Don Lamb
