We are looking for Philippians!
Interested in developing and deepening your spiritual life with a small group of soul-friends? Have you got what it takes to be a Philippian? At Pentecost we will be starting two groups of 6-8 “Philippians” who are like-minded parishioners prepared to make the following commitments:
- create and keep a personal Rule of Life - maintain a daily spiritual discipline - committ to attending meetings as agreed upon by the group
John and Marilyn will be facilitating the start-up of both groups (one meeting in the daytime, one in the evening), assisting each member to develop his or her own Rule of Life that is realistic and helpful in meeting everyday challenges and decisions and providing resources and guidance for anyone needing to begin or reinvigorate a daily discipline of prayer or meditation, and the reading of scripture or other inspirational writings.
Why Philippians? Apart from the obvious association with the parish and our patron saint, we commend Philippans 4:4-8 as a beautiful guide for Christian living in today’s world:
Rejoice in the always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Easier said than done! That’s why we need the mutual encouragement and support of like-minded souls—soul-friends. Accountability to a group provides added incentive to stay on track, as well as the benefits of shared discoveries, tips and friendship that “goes deeper”. After the initial start-up session(s), the groups will decide when and how often they will get together.
Please speak to John if you are interested and willing to make the necessary commitments. Numbers are limited, but we will initiate further groups in the Fall for anyone who cannot join one of these. Be a Philippian!
