LEAR, Howard Frank - April 30, 1931 - February 24, 2017

Howard passed away peacefully at his home with family at his side after a valiant battle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents Horace and Audrey Lear and brother-in-law Roger Gaunt. Howard is survived by his loving family; wife Margaret of sixty years, their three daughters, Penny (Bob) Fleming, Zan and Holly Lear. His cherished and treasured grandchildren Graham, Caitlin and Margo Fleming, Trevor and Allie Gow. His brother Lawrence (Edith) Lear and sister Barb (Phil) Young, sister-in-law Trish Gaunt, as well as many extended family members.

Howard was born in Vancouver and spent most of his life in the Kitsilano and Dunbar neighbourhoods where he was an active member of the community. As a youngster he discovered his lifelong love of soccer and as a teenager he belonged to the Kitsilano Boys Band and Four Notes Quartet. Howard taught business education at Killarney Secondary School in Vancouver and for a handful of years in Birmingham, England. Howard loved teaching, reading and following current world events, classical music, being actively involved in his church community, daily exercise and finding a quiet spot to sit in the garden. Music was a passion. He has been a member of the Cantata Singers, the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir and the choir at St. Philips Church. In retirement he joined Brock House and took up life writing, leaving his family a great legacy of stories about his life experiences in Vancouver.

Howard was a good listener, thoughtful, gentle and fair. He taught us to see the good and to appreciate the little things in life. He was very supportive and deeply valued the company of his family and friends.

Howard will be greatly missed, and lives on in the hearts and memories of those who loved him. Our sincere thanks to Howard’s compassionate doctors, Duncan Miller and Naaz Parmar, the wonderful staff on the “ACE” ward at VGH, and at Amica Arbutus. Special thanks to Sophia who made it possible for Dad to be at home with Mum. Thanks to Jacquie.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
